The health care system in the United States is vastly different from health care in Somalia.  Many Somali people have difficulty navigating the complex referral system and paperwork.  Additionally, the concept of preventative care is relatively new.  The Healthy Connections project employs community health workers, individuals who use their understanding of both the Western medical system and Somali cultural ways, to help bridge the gap in services.
