The Young Achievers program offers a constructive environment for Somali youth to learn, develop creativity, interact with positive adult role models, and prepare for higher education opportunities.
Youth attend classes to learn about health and nutrition, exercise, and pregnancy prevention. They then develop community service projects to pass on their knowledge to their peers. One example of these projects is The Young Achievers website, which launched in October 2010. Another example is their video, u r what u eat, which has been widely viewed on YouTube.
In December 2011 The Young Achievers were recognized at the Somali Entertainment Awards at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. The Young Achievers were given the "Best Organized Youth in the Community" award.
At the ceremony, Abdillahi Kahin and Hamdi Mohamed said that the awards reinforce what they always tell the kids, that, "No matter whether you are alone or others see you, always do the right thing, do the good and someone will come and say 'Thank you.'" Kahin reminded the youth at the awards ceremony to redouble their good efforts.
This program is made possible by funding from United Way.
