Pneumonia

According to the World Health Organization, pneumonia causes more deaths than measles, malaria and AIDS combined. Every 15 seconds, a child dies from pneumonia; every year, it kills more than 2 million children under 5 years of age.

Asia and Africa bear the greatest burden of death from pneumonia. The most vulnerable are the elderly, children under 2 years of age, children who are malnourished, and children and adults who have AIDS.

To combat pneumonia internationally, Wellshare is working with local governments and rural communities. We enlist the help of community health workers, who work tirelessly with us to implement effective pneumonia prevention and management programs. Together, we are protecting vulnerable populations by educating communities about the following:
•  better nutrition for child and parents
•  indoor air pollution reduction (from sources such as cook stoves and tobacco use)
•  frequent and proper handwashing
•  the effectiveness of and access to vaccinations
