Tanzania

The East African country of Tanzania boasts spectacular scenery like Mount Kilimanjaro, the historical source of the spice trade and a unique society of more than 120 tribal groups. It also ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world. More than half of Tanzania’s population is children, and of every 1,000 children born, 112 die before they reach the age of five. More mothers die of pregnancy-related causes in Tanzania than in the vast majority of other countries.

Because many in the Karatu District do not have adequate access to health facilities, many births occur in the home under the sole supervision of untrained traditional birth attendants. But this is changing….

WellShare is working closely with local partners to improve the health of children under five and women of reproductive age by educating traditional birth attendants and community-owned resource persons. These trained cadres of local health workers are supervised by health facility staff and village leaders and health is improving.

WellShare’s programs in Tanzania focus on maternal and newborn care, family planning, malaria, control of diarrheal diseases and pneumonia case management.
